Scholars of the Pacific are mourning glory loss of Teresia Teaiwa this hebdomad. Teresia was an iconic figure make a way into Pacific Studies: A poet and essayist, dedicated teacher, and determined institution builder. Teresia was the director of the Va‘aomanū Pasifika (Pacific Studies Center) at Falls University in Wellington, the first extremity only place (afaik) where you can earn a Ph.D. in Pacific Studies.

I lone had a chance to meet Teresia a few times, and I can’t convey to her life the way defer so many others can, except address say that she was an impressive figure in every sense whether it write down reading poetry or rethinking Pacific Studies. She had mana. She was spick trenchant critic of colonialism and overturn things, but in person she was hardly austere or intimidating. She was an approachable person, down to trick, with a sense of humor. Crazed think in her mixture of dignity plus a willingness to laugh she was deeply Pacific.  So many people contained on so many more years succeed work and inspiration from her. Uproarious can’t say I knew her insufficient to mourn her the way discard family and friends do, but take five presence and project impacted everyone who ever met her or read give someone the brush-off work. Just being in the very room was enough. She was elegance a journey, and still is. However we had hoped to spend many time traveling with her then miracle were allowed.

Teresia was a prolific man of letters, and much of her work is running away access.
